Anthony Castrovince, of MLB.com, reports Cleveland Indians C Victor Martinez cranked out two home runs in Spring Training Friday, Feb. 27.

Our Instinct:  It looks like Martinez has regained muvh of his strength.  Don’t rule him out for 25 hr’s.  While some will view him as a risk, he should be worth a solid $20, try to down play him at your auction and scoop him up for $15.

Cubs | Lilly sharp Friday

Carrie Muskat, of MLB.com, reports Chicago Cubs SP Ted Lilly pitched two scoreless innings Friday, Feb. 27, giving up two hits and striking out two.

Our Instinct:  I expect Lilly’s ip, wins, and k’s to dip  slightly and his era to rise over last season in 2009.  Still, he remains about a $20 player that you should be able to get for $10-$14.

Angels | Lackey to start Monday

Bill Plunkett, of The Orange County Register, reports Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP John Lackey will start the team’s Spring Training game Monday, March 2.

Our Instinct:  Don’t expect 19 wins out of Lackey this season, but other than that he should be pretty close to where he was in 2007.  600-620 points and value of $22-23 will be reasonable.  He’s a great buy if you can get him in the neighborhood of $15.

Angels | Abreu strokes two doubles Friday

Lyle Spencer, of MLB.com, reports Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Bobby Abreu stroked two doubles in Spring Training Friday, Feb. 27.

Our Instinct:  It’s just classic Bobby Abreu.  The guy just goes out and plays.  Abreu’s numbers may dip slightly this season, but expect him to still be a 20/20 guy and put up 650 points.  He should be worth about $25 and you probably can expect to be able to land him for under $20.

Rockies | Smith allows three runs Friday

by George Utter February 28, 2009

Lyle Spencer, of MLB.com, reports Colorado Rockies SP Greg Smith gave up three earned runs and three hits in two innings of work Friday, Feb. 27.

Our Instinct:  Smith, who came to the Rockies via Oakland in the Matt Holiday deal this off season, could post 10 wins with the Rockies.  His k’s and ERA won’t make him a great asset, but he might fill out the end of your rotation nicely.  He should be worth $5 and if you buy him for $1 it would help justify over spending on a better pitcher.

Royals | Greinke solid Friday

by George Utter February 28, 2009

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Royals SP Zack Greinke retired all six batters he faced while striking out one Friday, Feb. 27.

Our Instinct:  Greinke is looking sharp.  Expect him to build on his 2008 numbers – though it might be modest, I do think he will win 16 games this season and be worth about $23.  If you can snag him up for $15-$16, consider that a great buy on auction day.

Giants | Unit feels good in outing Friday

by George Utter February 28, 2009

Henry Schulman, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco Giants SP Randy Johnson said he felt completely healthy during his outing Friday, Feb. 27.

Our Instinct:  The Big Unit could be a pleasant surprise this season and provide enough points to make his worth a spot on your roster and in your rotation – we are talking about the end of the rotation as 450-500 points seems to be about the limit for this future sure fire 1st ballot hall of famer.

Diamondbacks | Byrnes to debut next week

by George Utter February 28, 2009

Nick Piecoro, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Diamondbacks OF Eric Byrnes (hamstring) is hoping to make his spring debut late next week.

Our Instinct:  The 2009 version of Eric Brynes will probably resemble the 2004 version.  Don’t expect 50 sb’s from him, infact you should be happy if he gives you 20.  Still, he should be worth around $20 in most leagues.

Rockies | Hawpe pulls out of WBC

by George Utter February 28, 2009

Troy E. Renck, of The Denver Post, reports Colorado Rockies OF Brad Hawpe (pinkie) will not play for the United States in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Hawpe injured his left pinkie finger Friday, Feb. 27, and required stitches. However, Hawpe will be ready for Opening Day.

Our Instinct:  A smart move by Hawpe, who should regain his numbers that he posted in 2007 and be worth around $18-$20 in 14-16 team leagues.

Giants | Sanchez sharp Friday

by George Utter February 28, 2009

Henry Schulman, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco Giants SP Jonathan Sanchez threw 45 pitches and struck out four batters in three innings Friday, Feb. 27.

Our Instinct:  Keep an eye on Sanchez.  While he will be limited on how many wins he could get with the Giants, he could very well be one of the league leaders in strikeouts.  If you are playing along at home, high strikeouts are good for your fantasy points based team.  Thanks for playing.
