Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports in his blog that Top infield prospect Carlos Triunfel, who broke his left fibula sliding into second base last night in a Class AA game.
Our instinct: Baker also wrote that Triunfel is to be examined in Seattle on Monday by Dr. Edward Khalfayan, the team’s medical director. We told you last night it was his tibia that was broken, but the team corrected its earlier information today and told us it was the fibula — a bone that runs along the side of the lower leg below the knee.
The thing to be determined now is whether Triunfel needs surgery. If not, he could be out only six to eight weeks. If he does need it, his season could be pretty much done.
“Hopefully he does not and it’s six to eight weeks,” Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said this morning. “We don’t know that yet. It’s unfortunate. The fortunate thing is that, maybe it’s early in the season, he can come back and get quite a bit of playing time before the year’s out, if everything goes well.
Carlos came in at #34 on our initial Baseball Instinct top 100 list, and this will surely effect his ranking, how much is yet to be determined.
