Our Instinct: This tragedy has made us all ill. I’m not one to preach to people, but can we bring some awareness to this problem? of the 40,000 traffic deaths each year, 15,000 of them are caused by drunk drivers. 8,000 of them last year were Nick Adenhart”s age range, and 2,000 of them were children. We are killing kids. We need stiffer penalties and to hold those who sell liquor to be more accountable when it comes to serving those who are well over the legal limit. Now, as for personal accountability – put the drink down. No one thinks you’re cool when your so wasted you have to grab the floor and hold on for dear life because you’re afraid of falling off the earth. If you have too much to drink, don’t drive. If you’re not sure – you’ve had too much. Call a friend, call a taxi, walk home, get a hotel room – hell, call me. The point is all are less expensive options than a night in jail and fines – or worse, the cost of a promising life; whether it be a kid who just pitched the game of his life or the kid in the backseat of the SUV that just got an “A+” on his science project.
