Blue Jays | Downs likely to assume closer duties
by George Utter on April 23, 2009
Jordan Bastian, of MLB.com, reports Toronto Blue Jays RP Scott Downs will likely assume the role of closer with RP B.J. Ryan (shoulder) on the disabled list.
Our instinct: This should of happened long before Ryan went on the DL, or the trip to the DL should of happened sooner. In any event theres many a “bad ass” Scott Down owner’s happy with this news.

That was a reference to me, gentle readers…as both a Ryan and a Downs owner…I’ve been calling Downs a Bad-Ass since day one. And the guy is just that. That Ryan had to lose his job due to injury shows that Cito Gaston is guilt of the bizarre arbitrary closer designation sickness that has infected so many managers over the years.
