Yankees | Interested in Hechavarria
by George Utter on February 14, 2010
The New York Post’s George A. King III reports that the New York Yankees may be serious bidders on 19-year-old Cuban SS Adeinis Hechavarria when the Office of Foreign Assets Committee (OFAC) allows him to sign with major league clubs. However, he cannot be signed by anyone until OFAC verifies his age, residency and identity – all of which could be completed as soon as this week. Hechavarria defected in Mexico last year after playing for the Cuban Junior National team two years ago.
Our Instinct: Boy, the Yankees got it bad for for Hechavarria. Expect a bigger deal from the Yanks than that the Red Sox gave Jose Iglesias, rightfully so. Hechy should provide a better bat and more power than Iglesias. This should happen soon.
