Mariners | Zduriencik considered Sweeney for coaching role

The Seattle Times’ Geoff Baker reports that Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik approached the agents for DH Mike Sweeney this offseason about having him join the team’s coaching staff. However, Sweeney said he wanted to continue playing, to avoid wondering years later about how much longer he could have played. “At least I’ll be able to live the rest of my life in freedom,” he said. “I don’t want to be looking in that rear-view mirror and questioning myself.” If Sweeney is unsuccessful in resuming his playing career, he is expected to take a year off before considering any opportunities to get back into the game.

Our Instinct:  Trader Jack certainly has an eye for where talent belongs, regardless if it’s the best defensive outfield in baseball or the kid who mows his lawn on Saturdays.  Mike Sweeney has been long respected in the club house and will make an excellent coach – probably in the not too distant future.  His chances of sticking with the Mariners this season are slim and he offers no fantasy value no matter where he signs.
