Pirates | Church could start at first
by George Utter on February 17, 2010
Jenifer Langosch, of MLB.com, reports Pittsburgh Pirates OF Ryan Church, who is slated to be the team’s fourth outfielder, could find himself starting at first base to start the regular season if 1B Jeff Clement does not prove himself at the position in Spring Training.
Our Instinct: Garrett Jones and Steven Pearce are in the mix as well. If all things fall right, Jeff Clement should be the 1b, but he hasn’t shown that he is ready and the clock is ticking. If Church wins the job he will have a little value, but don’t get carried away – we’re talking about a couple dollars.
