Phillies | Fifth starter not decided
by George Utter on February 22, 2010
Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee have said the competition for the fifth starter’s job is wide open, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Andy Martino. SPs Kyle Kendrick and Jamie Moyer, along with RP Jose Contreras, are considered to be the pitchers with the best shot of winning the job.
Our Instinct: Contreras is a safe bet to work long relief. If Moyer is healthy, he will probably get 1st shot at a rotation spot, meaning Kendrick will get shuffled to the pen. It’s unlikely that Joe Blanton, Cole Hamels, and Moyer can stay healthy for an entire season. Look for Kendrick to get plenty of chances to start and you might see a couple from Conteras.
