Mariners | 2B Jose Lopez plays third in spring opener

by George Utter on March 5, 2010

Jim Street, of MLB.com, reports Seattle Mariners 2B Jose Lopez played third base in the team’s spring opener against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, March 3. Lopez appears to be getting more comfortable at the position each day. “I liked the Lopez-Figgins combination out there,” manager Don Wakamatsu said. “There was the one to Figgy’s right (off Fred Lewis’ bat in the third inning) and Lopey played an outstanding third base on the one play.”

Our Instinct:  Having 3B eligibility to go along with 2B would be nice for Lopez, but a platoon with Figgins would not be.  What this really looks like is that the Mariners are ready to start life with Dustin Ackley at 2B, while showcasing Lopez for a possible trade.
