by George Utter on April 30, 2010

Toronto Blue JaysToronto Blue Jays C John Buck went 3 for 4 with 3 solo hr’s Thursday.  Buck has 4 hr’s on the season now.

Our Instinct:  To Buck’s credit the home runs came off of 3 different pitchers, however let’s not kid ourselves.  He’s hitting .194 on the season and is of little use for fantasy owners.

by George Utter on April 29, 2010

Colorado RockiesColorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa was placed on the 15 day DL with a torn tendon in his left middle finger.

Our Instinct:  While this isn’t good news for fantasy owners of De La Rosa, it could of been worse as he does not need surgery.  Expect a return in 4 to 6 weeks.

Cardinals | SP Jaime Garcia shuts down Atlanta

by George Utter on April 29, 2010

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia 7 shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.  He gave up just 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 5.

Our Instinct:  Yet another young player who will be a candidate for rookie of the year.  Garcia has faced the Brewers, Mets, Giants, and Braves this season and has given up just 3 earned runs against some pretty damn good lineups.  He’s 2-1 with a silly 1.04 era.  Garcia has struck out 17 while walking 9 in 26 innings on the season.  He’s a terrific back end of the rotation option and is looking more and more like a middle of the rotation option.

Reds | SP Mike Leake wins second game

by George Utter April 29, 2010

Cincinnati Reds SP Mike Leake pitched 7 innings of 5 hit, 2 walk ball against the Houston Astros on Wednesday.  The rookie also struck out 5 and gave up just 1 run.

Our Instinct:  Leake has to be considered as a candidate for rookie of the year.  After walking 12 in his first 2 starts, hes really settled down, giving up only 3 walks over 14 innings in his last 2 starts.  He’s now 2-0 with a 3.25 era, 18 k’s and 15 walks.  He’s a terrific middle of the rotation option for fantasy league owners.

by George Utter April 29, 2010

Boston Red Sox SP Jon Lester limited the Toronto Blue Jays to 1 hit while shutting them out on 11 k’s Wednesday.

Our Instinct:  Lester was a machine tonight.  The only thing that got to him was a high pitch count.  He gave up 2 walks to go along with the 1 hit, but was brilliant.  He improved to 1-2 and lowered that nasty era down to 4.71.  He’s got 32 k’s and 15 walks in 28.2 innings.  After giving up 7 runs in 6 innings on April 18th, he’s now pitched 12.2 scoreless innings and seems to have turned the corner.

Yankees | 2B Robinson Cano hits sixth home run

by George Utter April 29, 2010

New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano went 2 for 5, hitting his 6th hr of the season Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Our Instinct:  Cano was an obvious elite option at 2B going into this season, but hitting .390 with 6 hr’s, 15 rbi’s, 18 runs, and 2 stolen bases makes him the very best option currently.

New York Yankees SP C.C. Sabathia picked up his 3rd win in 5 tries by pitching 7.2 innings of 3 run ball against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.  He struck out 5 and walked 2.

Our Instinct:  The Big Man has given up a hr in consecutive starts while walking 8 after only walking 4 in his 1st 3 starts.  Still, hes 3-1 with a 3.12 era, while striking out 28 and walking 12 in 34.2 innings.  He’s still an elite option for any fantasy rotation.

Prospect Instinct: Domonic Brown

by Thomas Belmont April 29, 2010

Domonic Brown is a five tool outfielder with an electric right fielders arm and borderline center fielders speed. The biggest question concerning Brown in all of the gleaming commentary about him is the possible lack of development of any game changing power. But with 44 extra base hits in 2009 there is hope that was the tip of the iceberg.
