May 2010

Los Angeles Angels of AnaheimLos Angeles Angels 2B Howie Kendrick doubled his season total by hitting two 2-run home runs, including a walk-off home run where he carefully crossed home plate then celebrated with teammates on the infield grass in light of 1B Kendry Morales breaking his ankle the night before celebrating his walk-off home run.

Our Instinct:  Kendrick was taking no chances.  He’s had a fairly unremarkable season, hitting .256 with 4 hr, 27 rbi, 22 runs, and 4 sb.  Perhaps this will get him going.  The 26 year old is an interesting buy low candidate.  If he plays a full season, he could end up with 15 hr and 15 sb and hit around .300 and possibly score 90 runs.  If you can get him for next to nothing, he may end up being an above average middle infield option.

Florida MarlinsFlorida Marlins SP Anibal Sanchez pitched 6.2 innings while striking out 7 and walking 3 Philadelphia Phillies in a 1-0 shutout.

Our Instinct: Sanchez has alway had the ability, but staying healthy has been a challenge for him.  The 26 year old is 5-2 with a 2.89 era, 49 k’s, and 23 walks.  If you were looking for an opportunity to get the most out of him, the time is now.  Look to the pitching starved team that will over pay you for Sanchez.

Cardinals | 1B Albert Pujols returns to dominance

by George Utter on May 31, 2010

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols went 3 for 3, all home runs, as well as driving in and scoring 4 runs.

Our Instinct:  That’s more like it.  Pujols is now batting .310 with 12 hr, 38 rbi, 31 runs, and 3 sb to boot.  The most dominating man in baseball is about ready to go bananas.

Mariners | SP Felix Hernandez can’t buy a win

by George Utter on May 30, 2010

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez was denied a win after RP Brandon League served up a game ending grand slam to Los Angeles Angels 1B Kendry Morales on Saturday.

Our Instinct:  King Felix is 2-4 with a 3.55 era, 65 k’s, and 25 walks in 72 innings on the season.  In his last 4 starts he is 0-1 despite giving up 7 runs in 28 innings.  Hernandez hasn’t quite been himself yet this year, but run support and bullpen issues have really taken its toll on him.

Angels | 1B Kendry Morales out after grand slam

by George Utter May 30, 2010

Los Angeles Angels 1B Kendry Morales hit a walk off grand slam to defeat the Seattle Mariners 5-1 on Saturday night and broke his ankle celebrating at home plate.

Our Instinct:  What an amazingly fluky thing to have happen to one of the best players the Angels have to offer.  This will be a tough loss for the Angels, who are trying to fight their way back to the top of the AL West.  Morales will have surgery today and is very likely to miss the rest of the 2010 season.  Fantasy owner’s can’t help feeling crushed today.

Phillies | SP Roy Halladay pitches perfect game

by George Utter May 30, 2010

Philadelphia Phillies SP Roy Halladay pitched the 20th perfect game in the history of baseball on Saturday.  He struck out 11 Florida Marlins in the 1-0 victory.

Our Instinct:  Halladay is now 7-3 with a 1.99 era, 70 k’s, and 12 walks in 86 innings pitched.  The perfect game is the 2nd this month in baseball.  Oakland A’s SP Dallas Braden had one as well.  Halladay remains the top pitcher in baseball and a favorite for the NL CY Young award.

Cubs | SP Carlos Silva continues unexplainable success

by George Utter May 29, 2010

Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Silva struck out 11 and walked no St. Louis Cardinals in a 2 hit, 5-0 shut out on Saturday.

Our Instinct:  The sublime continues to develop into the surreal.  Silva is now 7-0 with a 3.12 era, 42 k’s, and 11 walks in 60.2 innings on the season.  Don’t expect this type of strike out performance from Silva again, but hes been awfully consistent.  This time last year we were saying that he was, well, just awful.  Keep rolling with him for now, however, if you were looking for a good time to sell – this is the time.

Yankees | 2B Robinson Cano hitting everything anything everywhere

by George Utter May 29, 2010

New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano is 10 for his last 16 at bats, with 2 doubles, a grand slam, 4 runs, and 9 rbi.  The grand slam came Friday Night against the Indians with his 1st ever appearance as the clean-up hitter.

Our Instinct:  Cano hit 5th today and delivered 3 more hits.  Just put him in coach, hes ready to play.  He’s hitting .359 with 10 hr, 37 rbi, 35 runs, and 2 sb.  He’s a fantasy elite and an AL MVP candidate.

Giants | Prospect C Buster Posey Bay Area Ready

by Thomas Belmont May 29, 2010

San Francisco Giants C prospect Buster Posey went 1-3 with his 2nd 3B of the season. His season average is currently being wasted in AAA at a .343 clip.

Our Instinct: OK, so maybe some of the instinct slipped out int he game notes. I’m at the point where the business side of the game sometimes bothers me even though I understand it. The Giants need offense. Posey is the best option they have even if he isn’t going to be their #1 catcher in 2010. It’s time to get his feet wet in the Bigs. Let him play 1B, OF and catch some. Let him hang out with his future battery mates. There is nothing to lose at this point. He’s going to hit and if he struggles it’ll be growing pains he can get out of the way now instead of 2011 when this should start competing annually for the NL West.

Rays | Prospect SS Tim Beckham catching fire

by Thomas Belmont May 29, 2010

Tampa Bay Rays SS prospect Tim Beckham went 2-4 with his 4th 2B of the season yesterday.

Our Instinct: Beckham has been on a tear this week and his season average is up to .219. That shows you just how bad he’s started off. He’s still young and still has a lot of time to develop the raw tools that he has into skills.  However, right now that is a long term project with a wide range of possible outcomes. We aren’t even sure he sticks at SS much less becomes the star his tool set would indicate., but make no mistake that the tool set is that of a stud infielder.
