July 2010

Chicago White SoxChicago White Sox SP Lucas Harrell, promoted just to face Oakland in the wake of the Edwin Jackson/Daniel Hudson deal, impressed with a solid line of 6 innings pitched, giving up 4 hits  and only 1 earned run for his first career major league victory.

Our Instinct:  It was a nice outing.  Just nice.  Look for more out of this kid once he gets his chance for real.  The 12 groundouts vs 5 flyouts is impressive, but posting zero strikeouts with 5 walks against the weak hitting A’s tempers our enthusiasm.  Chicago was right to demoted him for Jackson’s arrival.

Toronto Blue JaysToronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista went 3 for 3 with a hr, 2 walks, and 4 rbi in an 8-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday.

Our Instinct:  Bautista is hitting .262 with 31 hr’s, 79 rbi, 67 runs, and 4 sb.  Bautista has dwarfed his previous career bests by a mile and theres still 2 full months of the season left to go.  He’s having a fine season, but we are still skeptical about how good of a keeper he will make.

Tampa Bay RaysTampa Bay Rays RP Rafael Soriano pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning as the Rays defeat the New York Yankees to move within 1 game of the 1st place Yanks.

Our Instinct:  Soriano is 2-0 with a 1.77 era, 34 k’s and 9 walks over 40.2 innings.  He’s moved into the elite class of relief pitchers and seems to be right at home with the Rays.

Detroit TigersDetroit Tiger RP Jose Valverde came into the game Friday night with a 6-1 lead.  The Tiger closer hadn’t pitched in five days so apparently manager Jim Leeland ran him out there to get some work in.  Well, in 1.1 innings, Papa Grande gave up 4 runs on 2 hits and 5 walks.    Luckily for Tiger fans everywhere, Valverde eventually secured the win.

Our Instinct:  Another ugly stat, Jose threw 60 pitches, only 28 of them for strikes.  Valverde has been a rock the entire season for D-town.  Chalk this up as a mulligan for the all star fireman.  But watch his next outing, which may not be for a few days with the workout he gave his arm tonight.  Tiger fans, you can exhale now.

Indians | SP Giovanni Soto Cleveland bound

by David Reiffer July 30, 2010

Former West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) SP Giovanni Soto got traded to the Indians for major league 3b Johnny Peralta on Wednesday.  Soto should report to Low A Lake County Captains in the Midwest League as an addition to their starting rotation.

Our Instinct:  Detroit needed another stick for their injury-depleted line-up.  It is arguable that Peralta will provide the punch they need or not.  Cleveland, on the other hand, made a nice little deal for a young lefty with some potential, but also needs considerable development.  Check our Prospect Instinct article for more info on young Giovanni.  He also made Tommie’s list of promising Midwest league pitchers.

Tigers | 3B Jhonny Peralta to make debut tonight

by George Utter July 30, 2010

Detroit Tigers 3B Jhonny Peralta will make his Tiger debut Friday as the Tigers visit the Boston Red Sox.

Our Instinct:  Peralta is hitting .247 with 7 hr’s, 43 rbi, 37 runs, and 1 sb.  He should do a little better with the Tigers, but don’t expect miracles from the 28 year old.

Indians | OF Shin-Soo Choo keeps hitting

by George Utter July 30, 2010

Cleveland Indians OF Shin-Soo Choo has a 7 game hitting streak, hitting in all of his games since coming off the disabled list on July 23rd.

Our Instinct:  Choo went on the DL hitting .285 and is now hitting .297 with 13 hr’s, 46 rbi, 49 runs and 13 sb.  He’s still got plenty of time to be a 20/20 guy and is one of the better outfield options in fantasy bas

Rangers | 1B Jorge Cantu to make his debut tonight

by George Utter July 30, 2010

Texas Rangers 1B Jorge Cantu will make his team debut as the Rangers take on the Los Angeles Angels Friday night.

Our Instinct: Another great move by Nolan Ryan and company.  Losing Evan Reed and Omar Poveda isn’t going to kill the Rangers.  Cantu is hitting .262 with 10 hr’s, 54 rbi, and 41 runs.  He was on a pace to hit .262-16-87-66-0 on the season with the Marlins.  Those holding Cantu should be pleased as we think hes got a good shot at hitting 20 hr’s and over 100 rbis for the season now that hes with the Rangers.

Phillies | SP Roy Oswalt to make debut tonight

by George Utter July 30, 2010

Philadelphia Philles SP will make his team debut as the Phillies visit the Washington Nationals Friday night.

Our Instinct:  He’s not Cliff Lee.  Ruben Amaro Jr. is trying to save a little face here.  Oswalt is a decent addition to the Phillies and should get a little bump to his stats, especially wins.  He’s 6-12 with a 3.42 era, 120 k’s, and 34 walks in 129 innings on the season.
