Chicago White Sox SP Lucas Harrell, promoted just to face Oakland in the wake of the Edwin Jackson/Daniel Hudson deal, impressed with a solid line of 6 innings pitched, giving up 4 hits and only 1 earned run for his first career major league victory.
Our Instinct: It was a nice outing. Just nice. Look for more out of this kid once he gets his chance for real. The 12 groundouts vs 5 flyouts is impressive, but posting zero strikeouts with 5 walks against the weak hitting A’s tempers our enthusiasm. Chicago was right to demoted him for Jackson’s arrival.

Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista went 3 for 3 with a hr, 2 walks, and 4 rbi in an 8-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday.
Our Instinct: Bautista is hitting .262 with 31 hr’s, 79 rbi, 67 runs, and 4 sb. Bautista has dwarfed his previous career bests by a mile and theres still 2 full months of the season left to go. He’s having a fine season, but we are still skeptical about how good of a keeper he will make.

Tampa Bay Rays RP Rafael Soriano pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning as the Rays defeat the New York Yankees to move within 1 game of the 1st place Yanks.
Our Instinct: Soriano is 2-0 with a 1.77 era, 34 k’s and 9 walks over 40.2 innings. He’s moved into the elite class of relief pitchers and seems to be right at home with the Rays.

Detroit Tiger RP Jose Valverde came into the game Friday night with a 6-1 lead. The Tiger closer hadn’t pitched in five days so apparently manager Jim Leeland ran him out there to get some work in. Well, in 1.1 innings, Papa Grande gave up 4 runs on 2 hits and 5 walks. Luckily for Tiger fans everywhere, Valverde eventually secured the win.
Our Instinct: Another ugly stat, Jose threw 60 pitches, only 28 of them for strikes. Valverde has been a rock the entire season for D-town. Chalk this up as a mulligan for the all star fireman. But watch his next outing, which may not be for a few days with the workout he gave his arm tonight. Tiger fans, you can exhale now.
