Prospect Instinct: International Player Signing Period Starts

by Thomas Belmont on July 3, 2010

Now that the 2010 MLB amateur draft is over, it’s time for the International player signing period.  Teams now have another chance of snagging their next future star.  Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Carlos Gonzalez are some of the stars to come out of the International player signing period.

Here’s a list of the names to watch as the signings unfold. We’ll bring you more informations as this plays out.

1. Luis Heredia, RHP, Mexico
6-5 180 and very projectable at 16. Fastball already in low 90s with a average curveball. As he adds size he’ll add velocity.

2. Esteilon Peguero, SS, Dominican Republic
Top SS, 6-1, 185 at 16. He might not stick at SS long term but should develop enough power to hold down 3B.

3. Adonis Cardona, RHP, Venezuela
Another big pitcher. 6-4 and 180. Low 90s fastball with an average curveball. Big and projectable like Herdia.

4. Yorman Garcia, CF, Venezuela
6-2 and 175 and he has outstanding speed. He’ll add some power as he fills out.

5. Elvis Sanchez, 3B, Dominican Republic
Plus power. Plus arm. 6-2 and 200. Should stick at 3B

6. Jose Tovar, LHP, Venezuela
Lefty with a low 90s fastball and knows how to pitch at a young age. Could be the best lefty in this class by far.

7. Yorman Landa, RHP, Venezuela
Top prospect and jumps the list with a low 90s fastball that projects to mid 90s. Small frame at 6-0 and 170 but room to grow.

8. Vicente Lupo, OF, Venezuela
Lupo has plus power and good approach at the plate. Will need to advance as a hitter, but excellent upside.

9. Wilmer Romero, CF, Dominican Republic
Plus power, plus speed, plus arm. Raw tools are very enticing.

10. Renato Nunez, 3B, Venezuela
Could move behind the plate, athletic enough to make the move. Excellent bat, power is average.

11. Eskarlin Vazquez, RF, Dominican Republic
Bat speed generates good power and he has a power OF frame at 6-4 200lbs.

12. Vicmal de la Cruz, CF, Dominican Republic
The power/speed combo of the class. Could be a 20/20 CF in the future.

13. Rougned Odor, SS, Venezuela
Pure lefty swing and could add power in the future. Good bet to stick at SS. Battling small frame right now.

14. Ariel Ovando, OF, Dominican Republic
Great frame at 6-4 and 180. Raw power is plus tool as well as his bat speed. Going to be a corner OF, but bat could be special.

15. Jose Torres, RHP, Colombia
6-3 and 175, low 90s fastball with projection. Good frame and shows a good curveball.

16. Angel Mejias, LHP, Venezuela
Lefty with a projectable 6-3 190lbs frame. High 80s fastball that could be a plus lefty fastball. Secondaries need work.

17. Phillips Castillo, OF, Dominican Republic
Corner OF with average tools across the board, but no standout tools. Complete package of a player though.

18. Jordi Calderon, 3B, Venezuela
Average to above average tools across the board and he is already a good hitter for his age. Plus arm could play in RF.

19. Felix Jorge, RHP, Dominican Republic
Stock has dropped because of injury concerns on velocity dip. But if its short term someone is going to have a steal. Plus Plus fastball upside with slider and changeup combo.

20. Chris Tamarez, SS, Dominican Republic
Best athlete of the MI crop. Could have average power and great frame. Should stick at SS or could move the CF.

21. Gabriel Cenas, 3B, Venezuela
Excellent bat and instincts. Should stick at 3B and have above average power.

OTHERS TO WATCH

Alberto Triunfel, SS, Dominican Republic
The brother of Mariners prospect Carlos Triunfel. Better shot to stick at SS, but not near the ability with the bat.

.
Edwin Moreno, OF, Dominican Republic
Argy Raga, C, Venezuela
Pedro Perez, 3B, Colombia
Ronny Mejias, SS, Venezuela
