Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips keeps getting on base and 1B Joey Votto keeps knocking him home. Yesterday, during their match-up with the Chicago Cubs, Phillips scored 2 runs on 1 hit and a walk while collecting 2 rbi.
Our Instinct: After a couple seasons hitting clean-up or in the 3-hole, Brandon Phillips has fully embraced a new role this season: Leadoff. As the spark plug of the offense, he has transformed his game. For the first time in his career, he’s hitting above .300. He’s taking walks at a clip twice the years previous. And has already scored 62 runs 2010, compared to the 80 he scored in all of 2008. Would we like the 30-30 version of Phillips from 2007? Sure. Who wouldn’t? But this new Phillips isn’t bad either.
