Taking a quick look around the league at some top performers. We hope to bring you the names to watch before they start hitting the Top 100 lists. Keep an eye out for breakdowns on some of these players as we move our way through the farm system.
1B Paul Goldschmidt hit his minor league leading 31st Home run. He’s striking out a ton but hitting .312. They power is elite so if he can mature as a hitter he could turn into a Paul Konerko type. He’ll need to continue to hit for both average an power though because he’s relagated to 1B.
Marc Krauss LF ARI
Krauss just continues to hit as we said he would. Currently at .320 with 20 Home runs. He’s a pure hitter and another Babyback that will need to rely on his bat to get him to the big leagues. But Krauss will hit at any level and is pushing Jarrod Parker as my #1 Dback prospect.
Alonso started the season of in a terrible slump with his power not showing. Due to the wrist injury in 2009 the power outage was to be expected, but this another player known for his sweet swinig and prolonged slumps were not expected. But he’s come out of it in the past couple of months and is proving once again to be a .300+ hitter. Now where does he play in Cincy?
Austin stole his 44th base of the season. He’s a true speedster OF and reminds me of Michael Bourne. But he’s going to need to make more contact and work more walks to become a true leadoff hitter. He’s still young and if his development as a hitter is put the forefront instead of allowing him to rely solely on his speed he could be a true big lead leadoff threat.
Segura continues to hit .300+, get on base, steal bases and now is showing some legit power. He’s a good 2B and if he can continue his rise and add more power he could be a very special player inside of 2 years. Imagine the speed atop the Angels lineup with Segura, Trout and Bourjos. If they all develop they could be an excellent 1-2-3 home grown. Scary good.
Mike Trout OF LAA
Trout has slowed down his hitting torrent since his move up to High A but a recent 4-5 has his average up to .279 and he has 5 doubles so far. It will take a little time to adjust but there is no way that High A can hold Trout under .300 long term. This is a .300 hitter at the major league level before he’s 21.
Pete Bourjos OF LAA
Bourjos is ready now for Anaheim and the Angels brass have made the call. He’s at .314 on the season and hit his 13th HR and 13th double on the AAA season. He plays an excellent CF and just doesn’t have anything left to prove at AAA. Major League caliber talent. Future #2 hitter.
