Indians | SP Matt Packer shines Double-A Akron debut

by David Reiffer on August 4, 2010

Cleveland IndiansCleveland Indians (Double-A Akron Aeros) SP Matt Packer continued his eye-opening season tonight as he silenced Altoona allowing only 1 run on 6 hits with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts in 7 innings of work in his first game promoted from Low-A Lake County.

Our Instinct:  Finally.  The 22-year-old was destroying the Midwest League.  He needed a promotion because he really didn’t have anything else to prove.  In his Lake County career, he posted a 1.60 ERA, punched out 92 batters, and walked only 13 in 95 innings.  All this with a staggering 62% groundball rate.  Packer is a player we, at BI, have been following since earlier this season.  His current numbers will certainly be hard to sustain, but he’s gotten a good start.
