2011 MLB Draft | Shortstops Review Part 3

Once again welcome back to our review of the 2011 draft.  In this series we’re taking a look at players from the 2011 draft who signed and got into game play in 2011.  We’ve separated the High School players from the College players and compiled which players had the best season statistically.  This isn’t a prospect ranking, rather simply a report on how they did.  This will be part 3 on shortstops, as we discussed the High School crop in the 1st part, then we took a look at the best of the college guys statistically  who got over 150 at bats.  Now in part 3, lets take a look at those late signers. 2012 Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game Preview

The Arizona Fall League will have it’s showcase game on Saturday, November 5th 2011.  It will feature 50 of the top prospects in baseball, including the top 2 prospects in baseball; Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.  In addition, the top 2 draft picks and the #15 draft pick from the 2011 draft will hit the mound Saturday; Gerrit Cole of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Danny Hultzen of the Seattle Mariners, and Jed Bradley of the Milwaukee Brewers. Prospect Instinct | Drew Pomeranz, LHP Colorado Rockies

Drafted by the Cleveland Indians with the 5th pick of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Drew Pomeranz was considered the top college lefty in the class. Coming out of Mississippi where as a junior he went 9-2 with a 2.24 ERA and 139 K’s in 100.2 innings. So he was clearly a product that could make his way quickly to the majors.

Prospect Instinct | Jason Kipnis, 2B Cleveland Indians

Drafted in 2009 by the Indians in the 2nd round, Jason Kipnis, was the PAC-10 Player of the Year as an OF. He signed for $575,000 and immediately made his presence felt by hitting .306 in his NY-Penn debut. In 2010, the Indians who had a lack of depth in the middle infield decided to give the athletic Kipnis a shot at 2B and a more clear path to the majors. The transition from OF to 2B is never easy and should have taken a few years to complete, but Kipnis made the transition smoothly and blew through High-A and Double-A, never hitting below .300 at either level.
