Stetson Allie, RHP Pittsburgh Pirates

3/13/1991

Height: 6’2” Weight: 220

Pittsburgh PiratesStetson Allie was drafted in the 2nd round and 52nd overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2010 amateur draft. Due to a high signing bonus demand (which ended up being $2.5 million for the Pirates), Allie fell a little farther in the draft than had been expected. The Pirates were willing to pay the large signing bonus for one reason…he could throw hard and fast. His numbers in St. Edwards HS, Ohio school were almost the kind you would see in a video game with 91 k’s in 40 innings pitched and 1.05 era. So this pick came with a lot of fanfare and a high degree of interest to prospect watchers. We ranked him as the 19th overall talent coming into the 2010 amateur draft. This is what we had to say about him at the time: [click to continue…]

2011 MLB Draft | Catchers Review

by George Utter on November 12, 2011

Welcome back to our review of the 2011 draft. In this series we’re taking a look at players from the 2011 draft who signed and got into game play in 2011.  We’ve separated the High School players from the College players and compiled which players had the best season statistically.  This isn’t a prospect ranking, rather simply a report on how they did.  Right now, we are going to look at the group of Catchers.  Speaking of catchers, it was great news to see that Washington Nationals’ catcher Wilson Ramos was rescued from his abductors today.  What a very odd situation, but fortunately he’s well.  Now let’s dive into Catchers from the 2011 draft. Prospect Instinct | Gerrit Cole, RHP Pittsburgh Pirates

Gerrit Cole, RHP Pittsburgh Pirates

9/8/1990

Height: 6’4″ Weight: 220

Pittsburgh PiratesGerrit Cole was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the #1 overall pick in the 2011 draft and signed for a whopping $8mm at the deadline. Because he signed so late, it didn’t give the Pirates much reason to gear him back up and toss him into the mix in the FSL. So they waited and got him his first taste of pro ball in the Arizona Fall League. [click to continue…]

Prospect Instinct | Jameson Taillon, RHP Pittsburgh Pirates

by Thomas Belmont September 17, 2011

The Pirates selected Jameson Taillon second overall in the 2010 draft behind Washington selecting Bryce Harper. Taillon was widely considered the top arm available in the draft and there was even speculation that Washington would take Taillon. But in the end, the Washington Nationals decided to avoid any riots in the streets and took Harper. Much to the Pirates liking at the time since they actually had Taillon rated slightly higher than Harper.

Touch’em All | Gulf Coast League Top Baseball Prospects

by Thomas Belmont September 4, 2011

With the Gulf Coast League closing up shop for the 2011 season, I wanted to take a look around the league and see who some of the statistical stars were. Sure, it’s Short Season ball. Sure, most of these guys are making their U.S. debuts. But this is where it starts to become a little more clear how much you really love baseball. This is when we build our 2012 farm watch lists. This is where the stars of tomorrow are playing. You have some International signees mixed with 2011 draftees. Some of the International players spent a couple of season in the Dominican Summer League or the Venezuelan Summer League while the U.S. kids finished out their High School careers. But this is from where many of the lesser heralded prospects rise. So let’s get started with the hitters.
